Bright red in its pot six months after arrival, Europa has been reluctant to flower generously since being planted out. From 2002 it has been between Hamburg and Altona in a bed where both flower well. However, those flowers that are produced are at least as blue as Hamburg’s, and certainly bluer than Altona’s. So far, there has been no sign of the sepals developing the serrations and pointed tips like those that now characterise Hamburg in its maturity.
